Name: Aldus
Sector: Desktop Publishing

Description
Aldus Corporation was founded in 1984 by Paul Brainerd with the idea of creating a microcomputer-based newspaper pagination system. Instead, the product turned out to be Pagemaker software for Apple Macintosh users to combine text and graphics in page layouts; this was the "killer app" that took advantage of the Mac's graphical user interface, Adobe PostScript's printing capabilities and the Apple LaserWriter printer. When these products came together in 1985, the desktop publishing revolution was launched. Aldus went on to develop many successful software products used by business and creative professionals to communicate information and ideas before the company was acquired by Adobe in 1994.
